The Best 2019 SUVs came with lots of features. Modern SUVs and crossovers have room for passengers and goods, but it’s their all-terrain capabilities that have made them so popular.
Making the perfect SUV choice can be difficult and time-consuming because there are so many different models—compact, mid-size, full-size, two-row, and three-row—packed into dealer lots. In order to facilitate buying, we compiled a list of the top crossovers and SUVs for 2019 last year. It featured models that were highly ranked, our 10 Best Winners, which are taken from at least one model from each area.

Minivan: Hyundai Kona
The 2019 Kona’s eye-catching appearance may catch your attention, but its affordable price and enjoyable driving experience are what really earned it a top choice for our 10Best list of the year. Its oddly curved front grille conceals either a 147-hp or 175-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the latter of which demonstrated impressive acceleration on our test track. While not as outrageously designed as the sheetmetal, the inside is nonetheless endearing and functional. Although it doesn’t have as much room for passengers and cargo as larger SUVs, most customers will still find the Kona useful for road trips and supermarket shopping.
Kicks, a Nissan subcompact
With a playful side, the 2019 Kicks are everything the Juke aspired to be when it grew up—pragmatic and financially prudent. The little four-cylinder engine under the hood produces a meager 125 horsepower and took 9.7 seconds to reach 60 mph on our test track. All Kicks versions come with front-wheel drive instead of all-wheel drive. Although it isn’t very fast, it feels agile when navigating curves, and it achieved an impressive 37 mpg in our highway fuel efficiency test. A number of amenities, including touchscreen infotainment and automated emergency braking, are available in the roomy cabin of the Kicks, which can accommodate both passengers and goods.
BMW X1: Subcompact Luxury
The BMW X1, the company’s smallest SUV, is also its best vehicle since it’s attractive, well-equipped, useful, and enjoyable to drive. Its 4 cylinder, 228 horsepower turbocharged engine reached 60 mph in 6.3 seconds on our test track and returned 29 mpg on our interstate fuel economy route. The inside is made of high-quality materials, but since the sport seats are more cozy and supportive than the regular ones, we recommend investing in them. The 2019 X1 has as much load space as SUVs in the following larger size class when the rear seats are folded down. Every X1 model comes equipped with a number of driver-assistance systems as well as touchscreen infotainment.
Luxurious Subcompact Car: Volvo XC40
The 2019 XC40 is one of the few cars available today that has this level of attention to detail. Everything has been considered by the Swedish engineers who created this stunning vehicle, even incorporating a small detachable garbage can in the center console to help keep things organized. The 2019 CX-5 is great enough to attract luxury customers despite sporting a mainstream badge; for this reason, it is listed on our 10 Best list. The base engine is a 187-hp four-cylinder, but we think the 250-hp turbocharged four is better because it comes with all-wheel drive. Elegant materials adorn the interior, and high-end Signature versions resemble BMW or Audi vehicles in many ways. On all CX-5 versions, Mazda offers autonomous emergency braking in addition to touchscreen infotainment as standard equipment. We anticipate that most consumers won’t notice that its cargo area isn’t as big as other competitors’.
Compact: CR-V Honda
With its spacious luggage area, fuel-efficient engines, and passenger-friendly interior, the 2019 CR-V refines the crossover formula. Automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance are only two of the modern features and driver-support technologies available in the little Honda SUV. Its infotainment system is problematic, and driver assistance is an additional expense. The CR-V could also haul more and move faster. However, its excellent road manners and powerful brakes are unquestionably appreciated attributes. We like the Honda CR-V’s well-designed and aesthetically pleasing cabin, which offers enough room for passengers and cubby storage. It really is among the greatest crossovers on the market right now.

Small: Subaru Forester
The 2019 Forester, with its standard all-wheel drive, elevated seating position, and practical load capacity, is the epitome of the stylish crossover formula. When compared to its more ostentatious rivals, its boxy and upright look is uninteresting, but its cozy interior has modern amenities like an infotainment system that’s easy to use. With its four-cylinder engine and continuously variable automatic gearbox (CVT), the Forester is quiet and remarkably fuel-efficient at highway speeds. However, there are moments when the CVT becomes raucous. The Subaru Forester is the best crossover for practical purchasers because it does everything well, even though it lacks evident frills and thrilling driving experiences.

Small: Toyota RAV4
The 2019 RAV4 gets a striking redesign that makes its best-selling SUV more competitive with modern competition. In addition to its reputation for dependability, the small Toyota SUV has a sturdy appearance and comes equipped with standard driver assistance features. These include lane-keeping assistance, automated emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. Its interior boasts plenty of storage spaces as well as attractive standard features like Wi-Fi hotspots, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. The RAV4 offers a smooth ride and a variety of powertrains, such as a fuel-efficient hybrid and an obedient four-cylinder. However, the Bimmer comes with basic safety technology like AEB. The BMW X3 is one of the best sport utility vehicles.
Volvo XC60, a Compact Luxury Vehicle
The new 2019 XC60 trades toughness for luxury and boasts cutting-edge safety technology. The Volvo SUV is extremely fuel efficient thanks to its choice of three different powertrains, one of which is a plug-in hybrid. While the XC60’s ride quality suffers on rough pavement, it travels smoothly and securely otherwise. The Swedish machine’s interior is luxurious, with plenty of room for its passengers. It boasts standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality on its tablet-like infotainment system, but it sometimes lagged behind our inputs. Standard equipment includes both automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance. The luxurious Volvo XC60 is one of the best SUVs on the market because it has a unique, one-of-a-kind vibe.

Mazda CX-9: A Compact SUV
The 2019 CX-9 combines premium design with exceptional pricing, making it ideal for everyday families. The largest Mazda SUV has stunning good looks and handles superbly. The CX-9 impresses both its driver and passengers with its exceptional responsiveness and unexpected quietness. Seven people may be accommodated, albeit the third-row legroom is tight and the trunk is inadequate. Even so, it comes standard with driver-assistance technology like automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring and boasts a user-friendly infotainment system. The four-cylinder turbocharger gives it decent power and excellent gas mileage. The Mazda CX-9 has a few drawbacks, but it is otherwise the greatest mid-size SUV on our 2019 10 Best Trucks and SUVs list.
Volkswagen Atlas, a compact SUV
Volkswagen was slow to jump on the SUV bandwagon, but its new Atlas model is a strong contender. At a starting price of less than $35,000, it’s an attractive bargain for its luxury ride and room for seven adults. Volkswagen understands that family safety is paramount, which is why all trim levels of the 2019 Atlas come standard with features like automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and heated exterior mirrors. The middle row is spacious enough for adults, but the second and third rows could use some extra padding. Cargo space is abundant as well. With the second and third rows folding, we were able to fit 38 carry-on bags, which is on par with the massive Honda Pilot.
Compact: the Honda Passport
If you are familiar with Honda’s roomy three-row SUV, the Pilot, the 2019 Honda Passport will feel like a natural progression. The Passport is a lot of fun to pilot thanks to its quick and responsive handling. It happens quickly, too. We timed it going from 0-60 mph, and it took 5.8 seconds. Behind the second row, there is storage for 41 cubic feet, and there is a total of 78 cubic feet available inside the vehicle when the seats are folded down. Additional capacity can be found beneath the rear cargo floor. Adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, frontal collision warning, and lane departure warning with lane keeping assist are just some of the driver aid systems that come standard. The Passport is a strong and useful competitor in a growing market.
Compact: Subaru Ascent
There are available captain’s chairs for the second row and plenty of cupholders, making the inside of the 2019 Ascent more adaptable than an Olympic gymnast. The Ascent features full-time all-wheel drive like any decent Subaru, but the four-cylinder engine is loud and unrefined, and the car lacks excitement while accelerating. While the wind and road noise were more noticeable than we’d like on the highway, the ride was still enjoyable. As for gas mileage, it’s about par for the course. We were able to achieve the EPA-estimated 26 mpg in our real-world tests. A 4G LTE mobile hotspot is available, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

Jeep Wrangler (medium)
The 2019 Wrangler’s off-road prowess and one-of-a-kind, detachable body panels make it ideal for exploring the great outdoors. The Wrangler has all-wheel drive, may be had with two or four doors, and has an instantly recognizable design. The base engine is a V-6 linked to a manual or automatic transmission, while the optional engine is a turbocharged inline-four aided by a hybrid system. We think it looks sharp, and we’re completely enamored by the way it handles and the power of its supercharged V-6 when we get behind the wheel. It can tow up to 7700 pounds and has a respectable 333 horsepower. However, we do not believe that the four-cylinder can adequately propel the Q7.The third row is also a little tight, but those are our only real problems. For 2019, we consider it the best midsize SUV available, so we included it on our list of the 10 Best Trucks and SUVs.
The Porsche Cayenne, a luxurious midsize SUV
It should come as no surprise that the 2019 Cayenne is included on this list, considering it shares its platform with the Audi Q7. The Cayenne, like all Porsches, is equipped with a variety of potent engines that are all twists on the same theme of a supercharged V-6. One such hybrid model has 445 horsepower, can travel 27 miles on electric power alone, and can pull 7,716 pounds. Like any good Porsche, the Cayenne has impressive acceleration. We had a Cayenne S accelerate to 60 miles per hour in 4.8 seconds and stop at 70 miles per hour in 159 feet on our test track.
Mercedes-Benz GLS-class: Extra-Large Luxury Vehicle
The 2019 GLS-class is our top pick for large SUVs because of how well it handles its primary responsibility of carrying passengers and their belongings. The GLS is strong and quick, like an offensive lineman who has studied ballet. The GLS has three rows of seats, with plenty of legroom even in the third row, unlike an offensive lineman. Its 362-horsepower twin-turbo V-6 may not sound like much, but in our tests, it accelerated from 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds. The GLS has all you need and more for less than $75,000, making it a relative steal. To show our appreciation, we’ve given the GLS-class our 10 Best Trucks & SUVs honor for the third year in a row.
Extremely Splendid SUV: the Mercedes-AMG GLS63 4Matic
The 2019 GLS63 is just as roomy and functional as the standard GLS-class, but it has a huge performance advantage thanks to its 577-horsepower twin-turbocharged V-8 and a delectable exhaust noise. Our test track time for 0-60 mph was 4.3 seconds in this high-performance SUV, putting it ahead of its Benz-branded sibling by a wide margin. The GLS63 comes rather well-equipped with amenities from the get-go, what with its standard leather upholstery, massaging front seats, and extensive array of infotainment niceties. All Mercedes-Benz models come standard with a suite of advanced driver assistance features, including automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.

Lincoln Navigator/Navigator L, a Big Luxury Vehicle
The 2019 Navigator is not only stunning to look at, but also quick thanks to its 450-horsepower twin-turbo V-6. The Navigator L, a long-wheelbase variant, is also available for those who require even greater interior volume. Wood accents decorate the plush cabin, and a sleek 10-inch display stands between the driver and front passenger. The Navigator’s front seats are massaging and adjustable in 30 different ways; the inside features luxurious Black Label materials. We see the Navigator as a modern take on the iconic Lincoln Continental of the 1960s, filtered through the lens of a sport-ute.
Chevrolet Suburban, the full-size SUV
The 2019 Suburban is the original sport utility vehicle (SUV), and depending on your perspective, it was either responsible for or at least instrumental in the development of the SUV market in 1935. We’re cool with that since the Suburban has a no-nonsense approach to life that we respect. With the right equipment, it can transport nine people and their belongings, or tow up to 8300 pounds. The base engine is a V-8 with 355 horsepower, but an upgraded 420-horsepower engine is available as an upgrade. It will facilitate your return to nature more rapidly.
Chevrolet Tahoe, a full-size SUV
The Chevrolet Tahoe has a variety of great qualities, such as a relaxing and quiet interior, adequate towing capacity, and a top-notch media system. The Tahoe’s truck roots become instantly apparent when you take it over a patch of bumpy pavement. Our testing has shown that the standard 5.3-liter V-8’s 355 horsepower isn’t nearly enough to propel a fully loaded Tahoe; for that purpose, we recommend the 6.2-liter V-8’s 420 horsepower. The Tahoe’s Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, and plentiful USB ports/12-volt outlets make it a great choice for tech-savvy families.
